Federal Government Shutdown

The federally-funded Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) remains delayed until further notice as New York awaits funding from the federal government. Households lacking resources that can't afford a fuel delivery or are facing a utility shutoff can apply for Emergency Assistance through their local department of social services.

New York State has completed issuing full November SNAP benefits using federal funds. December SNAP benefits will be issued on a regular schedule without delay. The recently enacted federal spending bill also fully funds SNAP through the end of the federal fiscal year 2026.

Wheels for Work (Wheels) 2007-2008

Appropriation Level: $4,000,000

Wheels for Work programs are designed to assist TANF eligible individuals with obtaining personal vehicles that are necessary for transportation to and from employment or other allowable work activities. Through Wheels for Work, the following services are offered:

  • affordable automobile loans;
  • car donation programs supported by the surrounding community;
  • car repair assistance;
  • car insurance and assistance with license and registration fees;
  • driver’s training and defensive driving;
  • financial counseling;
  • basic car care maintenance classes; and
  • child safety seats.
